What's this?

I live in San Francisco and dig it, but I am in love and am obsessed with my under-appreciated hometown, Detroit. I believe the last person from either coast of the US or Europe to write anything intelligent about the Great Lakes region was Herman Melville--in 1851 <grin>.

Outsiders think of Detroit--if they think of it at all--as a land-locked, rust-belt town in the middle of a corn field in the midwest that came into existence with the automobile. Well, we're actually in the eastern time zone. Our waters carry more freighter traffic than the Suez and Panama Canals combined. We have a deeper French heritage than New Orleans and our city was founded the same year Phildelphia was incorporated. Over the years we've developed quite a few cultural gems.
