Almost every day of the year there is a fiesta in some town, somewhere in Spain. This is a country that likes to party! Wherever you go you can be sure to find a good time, but here is a collection of some of the best, the craziest, the scariest and the most unusual!
Spain is full of historic towns but this is one of the best! In the beautifully preserved walled villa you can find evidence of the town's Roman, Muslim and Christian pasts, and everywhere is evidence of the money that flowed back from the Americas in the 16thC, namely local man Francisco Pizarro's bloody conquest of the Inca empire.
These are some of my "Don't Miss" recommendations for Andalucia (Cordoba, Granada, Sevilla, Cadiz), Spain. Generally if there's no chance you could miss it because it's mentioned in every single guide book, I have not mentioned it here, but these are some of my other favorite things to do/see/try!
Segovia is usually "done" by most visitors to Spain as a day trip from Madrid. I suggest making it a weekend, and take the time to wander around it's old streets and soak up the magic of this beautiful city.
If you want to get out there and explore those mountains, there exists a fantastic network of Refugios which provide cheap dormitory style accommodation (around 10€), hearty, hot meals (around 12€) and the chance to meet other like-minded luntatics! It's important to book ahead for beds & food on weekends and holidays, and to check accessibility in bad weather. A great majority are not accessible by car, so you'll have to carry your stuff in!
