I love the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Yes, the best time to go is Autumn to see the foliage change colours. However, this area is spectacular and interesting through-out the year. Especially for the summer because of the world-renowned festivals.
I must admit I never quite understood the throngs of tourists in Harvard Yard, but the campus is beautiful and worth strolling around and taking in the Cambridge sights. Just try not to act like a tourist!
