These are places I often find myself when visiting my friends and family in Philadelphia.

Hands down the most fantastic hoagie in all of Philadelphia. They only open at lunch hour, and close when they run out of rolls. CC and South Philly locations.
The whole Reading Terminal market is worth a visit, but the sandwiches at this place make it difficult to eat anywhere else when I drop in. Amazing sides, also.
Comfort food. You can spend a lot here, but also spend a little. If on a budget, go for mac & cheese or soup and grilled cheese. You will not be disappointed.
Already written up in my Cheese Steak Tour, a perennial stop with my veg/vegan friends. Sandwiches, pizza and deserts... all dairy free! (Meat also available)
The most phenomenal vegan Chinese food a meat eater could hope for. They recreate meat dishes with various subs. They also have vegan dim sum at certain times.
Awesome pizza slices as big as your head. Wrap them around a steak from Jim's down the street, and take on the Jim's/Lorenzo's challenge. A rite of passage.
Not a true 24-hr diner, & stingy with soda refills, but has a lot of sentimental value to me. Sweet potato fries, shakes. Lounge next door often has good music.
You cannot swing a dead cat in Phila w/o running into a Marathon Grill, but this isn't really a bad thing. Great food selection, between cheap and mid-price.
There are 3 Ritz theaters close together in Old City. The Five shows current off-beat, artsier selections. Go take a gamble on a film you've never heard of.
I go here about every other time I'm home, and I still haven't seen a quarter of it. So much amazing art, there's bound to be something for everyone!
A MUST STOP on the First Friday of the month. Space 1026 is a art cooperative studio and gallery. They will all be (more) famous some day, so meet them now.
A stage frequented by punk rockers on the first floor, a dance room with DJ's spinning 80s and 90s jams on the second. Best identity crisis ever? Often a cover.
A Stephen Starr classic. Sushi conveyor belt, light-changing dining pods. Phenomenal food, but be prepared to pay for what you get & make reservations.
Owned by community activist Judy Wicks, White Dog is an iconic Univ. City restaurant serving amazing food made from local organic ingredients. Great gift shop.
A museum of medical oddities. A little pricey, and after one time through, you'll find it hard to pay again, but definitely worth a stop if you haven't been.
Another place you can go several times, & not see it all. Walk through the human heart, or check out the meteorology lab. Often great exhibs. A little $ though.
A great little ice cream shop. They make their own stuff--I know, because my brother makes it! Open late, right in the heart of Old City and Market St.
The finest messenger bags in the USA are hand made in Philadelphia. Visit the RELoad store to order your own, or purchase handmade bike accessories. Made there!
As a current Portlander, I have high standards for espresso. The barista knew how to wield the LaMarzocco to my delight. They also sell Intelligentsia beans!
Out of the way in chi chi Chestnut Hill, this place holds their own. Up there with Spruce St. in quality. If you're committed to visiting, take the R8 out there
Once, I sampled 'turkey fig' gelato here. One of two downtown locations, both with wonderful and expansive selections.
Awesome and cheap Indian lunch buffet in the heart of Philadelphia. Last I was there, it was $7, and very much worth it. Meaty options, but very veg friendly.
Went here (twice) for the first time over Thanksgiving. Strongest evidence of Philly's new appreciation of beer. Shot of wild turkey & a glass of beer for $6.50

Completing the Jim's/Lorenzo's challenge is one of the greatest accomplishments of my life.
