A Hipster's Guide & Itinerary - Things to Do in San Francisco

by kevin kevin

Are you a hipster, or related to one? Do you have irresistible urges to drink shade-grown coffee and listen to the killers? Or maybe you're just interested in knowing what this hipster thing is. Here's a brief introduction to my favorite hipster hangs.

Timbuk2

This is a fun store for looking at all the types of fabrics you can use on your Timbuk2 bag. They have fabric swatches and samples of all their bags.

Chrome

A fantastic alternative to the Timbuk2 messenger bags. Their waterproof and over-the-shoulder design allows for easier riding to and from bi-rite market.

Four Barrel Coffee

If Ritual Roasters is so 2008, and blue bottle jumped the shark with their mint plaza outpost, then perhaps Four Barrel coffee is for you. Tasty lattes, etc.

Elbo Room

Ahhh the Elbo room. Strap on your skinny black jeans and vintage shirts, friends, welcome to hipster central. I have to say, I love this place... they have PBR

Birite Creamery

After a stroll through the 'gourmet ghetto' of Dolores, sit outside Bi-rite creamery with some quirky honey lavender ice cream. I love the coffee toffee! Bring your dog - they should get a treat too!

Valencia Cyclery

If you truly want to be a hipster, you need to own a fixie, single-gear bike. Why? Gears are so dated, man. I love Valencia Cyclery's selection and service!

Dynamo Donuts

Life wouldn't be complete without these tasty little treats. Interesting flavors like bacon-maple and honey-thyme will wow your friends & family.

Flora Grubb Gardens

This is a bit far away to bike to, but well worth it. What's better than shopping for rare plants and palm trees.... while drinking ritual coffee?

Yamo Burmese Food

With about 10 seats, this place is a steal if you can get a seat. If not, plenty of other hip, cheap options in the area.

Dog eared books

This place has a fantastic selection of used books. I've found a few new ones here too. Then pick up an old novel and skip over to Ritual Roasters for a coffee

Elixir

Drinks with the world "muddled", "extract", "angostura", etc. line the menu here. Fancy drinks in a not so fancy neighborhood. Love the Manhattan!

Schauplatz Clothing

If you can't find hipster plaid shirts here, or cute 80's clothing if you're a hipster lady, then I don't know where to send you. Good deals for clothes.

El Farolito

Taqueria El Farolito has some of the best greasy mexican you can find in SF. Perfect after a late night of partying with friends.

Zeitgeist

Where motorcyclists and hipsters co-exist in a symbiotic relationship not unlike those of African oases where elephants and lions sip from the same spring.

Blue Bottle Coffee-Kiosk

The hipsters, they need caffeine - this is the place to go for quailty grounds. You'll spy many hipsters outside this kiosk - usually with a small dog in tow.

Taqueria Cancun

One of my favorite late night Mexican haunts in San Francisco. The super quesadilla with carne asada may be my favorite late-night food on earth.

La Palma Mexicatessen

You'll find two groups of people here: hipsters and local neighborhoodies. Delicious mexican food during the day - and the best fresh ground masa in SF.

Weird Fish

Because meat is *so* yesterday, Weird Fish decides to take on two under-served markets: Fish, and Vegan food. I'm definitely a fan of their fried pickles!

Taco Stand at Taqueria Vallarta

Stand in line on this 24th street staple for some of the best tacos of your life. Hipsters make an occasional appearance here if only because of the proximity of Humphrey Slocombe.

Balmy alley mural

Beautifully painted murals on this small street off of 24th. Grab some tacos, coffee or ice cream and peruse this hidden treasure in SF

Sightglass Coffee

These guys literally just opened, so you can still avoid lines. A very friendly group of folks. Used to be the roaster for blue bottle - and the quality stays high at this joint too.

I feel intimidated by hipsters, so this guide really helps me know which places I should avoid. Thanks!

Some hipsters may be silly be essentially they are responsible for scoping the up and coming, the quirky and the cheap and overall unique food/fashion/artful experiences. Wicked guide. Don't be afraid of your local hipster!
