Egyptian temple in Madrid! A gift to the people of Spain for working to save the temple of Abu Simbel from destruction, it's an impressive artifact in an even more impressive location!
Features an ever changing round of contemporary art exhibitions from the Caixa collection, worth a stop, if only to take a peek at the vertical garden. Free entry.
One of Madrid's "must see" art museums. Seriously good collection and Picasso's Guernica will leave you speechless.
The Spanish Royal Family are rarely in residence in this 18thC palace that just shrieks "my palace is bigger than your palace" Apparently size does matter.
Madrid's cathedral is located directly in front of the royal palace, it was completed in the 1990s after over 100 years in construction.
It's not every day you walk into a train station and find a tropical garden inside.. With a pond stacked full of turtles!
They say they serve the best calamari bocadillos in Madrid! Hard to find standing room during lunchtime rush, but the efficiency of the waiters amongst the chaos is an amazing sight.
This immigrants' bario a short hop from the main drag is where I go to eat in Madrid. Turkish, Indian, Kurdish, and Moroccan restaurants abound here.
Kurdish kebabs (jalos) and a good selection of mixed plates and salads. One of my favourite places in Madrid, I make sure I visit every time I'm in town!
It's nothing to look at from the outside, and the decor is pretty awful, but this is seriously good, authentic Moroccan food at a good price. No alcohol served.
Lavapies is full of Indian restaurants, but this one is the best and favoured by the locals. Good, standard North Indian fare at reasonable prices. Always busy!
Every big city needs a good park and El Retiro is one of the best. Join the locals strolling, relaxing and playing in this beautiful stretch of green.
Set aside several hours to take in all El Prado has to offer. Don't miss the Goyas nor Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights"
Works on from the extensive Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, stretching from medieval to 20thC. Worth the visit just to see the stunning medieval religious paintings, but there's plenty of other nice pieces as well.
It's big, it's over the top and it's the most ridiculous post office i've ever seen in my life!
Take a stroll along Madrid's busiest (and noisiest) street showcasing an astonishing collection of early 20thC architecture, grand hotels, shops and cinemas.
Forget Calle Preciados, this is the street for shopping in Madrid, funky designer boutiques, known brands, alternative labels, cafes, restaurants & etc...
OK, so the North Americans might think this is old hat, but I can't describe to you how excited I was to discover my favourite lipsticks here in Spain!
If you're looking for shoes, go here! This street is wall to wall shoe shops!
The centre of Madrid, even if it's not on your list you'll still find yourself passing through. Madrid celebrates NYE here, which can get a little crowded!
This one is definitely for the tourists, but it will give you some idea of just how much jamón iberico is revered in Spain!
Madrid's principal plaza, always buzzing with life.
Madrid's oldest church, unfortunately it seems to be only open for services, so I've never been able to see inside.
For the budget traveller, this is the best hostel in Madrid and one of the best i've ever stayed in anywhere. Friendly staff and lovely common patio to relax.
The excuse for regular visits to Madrid, the best Asian supermarket in Spain (I should know, I've been searching a long time). A must for spice starved expats!
A beautifully restored castle/palace in Manzanares el Real to the north of Madrid. It still belongs to the Duke of Infantado, who has ceded it to Madrid as a museum.

Thanks Alexandra!
Taking this with me next week! Thanks, Sharon! (p.s. we're still figuring out how to rent a car and find some of your Basque recommendations. It's in the works!)
Hope you find it useful! And hope you enjoy Madrid! And get hold of that car!!
Sharon, I just got back from Madrid and can say with confidence that your guide didn't lead me astray once. My compadres and I were in search of non-Spanish food and went to Bombay Palace on Friday and it blew our socks off. The best palak paneer any of us had ever had, and the friendliest service in possibly all of Europe... Gracias!
comradekitsch: I'm so glad you found it useful... and especially glad you liked Bombay Palace... I'm sad to say I'm currently in mourning for the recent demise of an Indian Restaurant closer to home (in Vitoria) that closed due to lack of interest... It was the best i've eaten in Spain, but that being said Bombay Palace does hit the spot!
