Houston is Underrated

I lived in Houston for 17 years. These are some of the things I enjoy doing when I go back to visit.

Goode Company BBQ

Ah, I wish I could get BBQ like this in California. Have a beef brisket sandwich on jalapeƱo bread -- you won't be disappointed.

Reef

Fresh local seafood prepared simply. My favorite seafood in Houston.

Menil Collection

Impressive collection of art - often noted for surrealism - housed in a "neighborhood" of buildings. Don't miss the Dan Flavin gallery (shown in the photo).

Rothko Chapel

A great place to relax and escape the summer heat. Beautiful large-scale Rothko paintings fill the space and help clear your mind.

Rice University

The Rice campus is a beautiful and shady place to take a walk or have a picnic. Check out the piece of the Berlin Wall that's there.

Johnson Space Center

See rockets, mission control, and moon rocks up close

MFAH

Fantastic collection of a wide range of art. A great place to cool off on a hot summer day.

Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

Right across from the Fine Art Museum - nice small exhibitions that are well worth dropping in on. Free.

Black Labrador

Great pub food and atmosphere -- enjoyed all the typical pub favorites as well as the grilled salmon. Good beer list too!

Orange Show Foundation

Perhaps one of the most unusual places I've ever seen. A true testament to oranges and human individuality - not to be missed by any art enthusiast.

Cockrell Butterfly Center

Fun indoor exhibit of live butterflies -- photographers make sure to bring your macro lens!

Pico's Restaurant Inc in Bellaire

Probably my favorite Mexican restaurant in Houston. Authentic unusual dishes - the seafood enchiladas are especially tasty.

I visited recently. The locals were beyond friendly and the ethnic restaurants were authentic. It was a joy.

Gotta agree with you about Goode's Brisket. I haven't had brisket that good since I left Houston. Seems I remember there were two Goodes, one not far from Bissonnet and the other off Kirby and the I-59. My fav was the rustic location with outdoor dining.

Nice choice of venues, style of writing and presentation... Shows character - very nice indeed :)
