San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Bakio

This rocky island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Park the car and climb the endless stairs to reach the 10thC hermitage and great views at the top.

Bermeo in Bermeo

traditional basque fishing village, drop into one of the bars around the fishing port and try the local txacoli (sparkling white wine).

Mundaka in Mundaka

For the surfers! This left breaking wave is the most famous in Europe and is regarded by some as one of the top ten surf spots on the planet.

Playa de Laga in Ibarrangelu

This little gem of a beach is one of my favourites. It's quiet, secluded and free from houses lining the shores.

Elantxobe in Elantxobe

Tiny fishing village with houses jammed together on an impossibly steep slope. End of the line for the bus route, with a turntable to turn the bus around! Lots of stairs!

Ea in Ea

Picturesque little village at the end of a long, narrow inlet. Old houses line both sides of the river, connected by two medieval bridges, a small beach and fishing port. The walk out to the small chapel on the headland gives good views of the coastline.

Lekeitio in Lekeitio

Attractive little fishing village with beach. Walk across the causeway to the isla at low tide, but be sure to return before high tide or you'll have to swim!

Matriku in Mutriku

Traditional basque houses tumble down the slopes to the fishing port below. Nice beaches nearby.

Getaria in Getaria

Nice beach and good fresh seafood to be had straight from the fishing port to the table of the local restaurants..

Zarautz in Zarautz

Modern beachside resort with beautifully preserved old town centre... join one of the learn-to-surf classes down at the beach...

Pasai Donibane in Pasaia

Tiny houses jammed between the steep slopes of the mountains and the narrow sea passage. Good eating to be had in the seafood restaurants that abound.
