A guide to some of my favorite places to eat and hang out in Seattle. Arranged (very) roughly by area. Note: This guide used to be called "Weekend in Seattle," but I've now added enough stuff for one week or more.
Very cool building - worth it to go inside and check out the 10th floor lookout point, "book spiral," and reading areas with comfy chairs & colorful rugs.
Independent book store near Pioneer Sq. Looks and smells like a book store should! Wander around and get lost in the shelves.
If you like cured meat, this is an absolute must-stop. Sandwiches or meats sliced to order (salumi, lardo, coppa). Go early - they often run out of stuff.
Kinda upscale Vietnamese restaurant hidden in the corner of a strip mall. The menu is amazing - so many choices! Very popular, so you may have to wait.
Free waterfront sculpture park. Nice place to just stroll around or lie out on the grass and relax! Don't miss the metal tree and rotating ampersand.
Wonderful bakery and cafe in Belltown. Baked goods, soups, salads, sandwiches. Just walk by and look in the window - you won't be able to resist going inside!
Small, speakeasy-style lounge (though music and decor are not really of the period). Nice cocktails and small plates. Unpretentious and low-key.
Peek down an alley to find this kitschy, fun, kooky spot for Italian food. Amazing specials e.g. 1/2 price wine on Sun. and all-night happy hour on Wed!
If you're a fan of cats, check out this bookstore. Kitties roam freely through the aisles & shelves. Allergy-sufferers beware... the fur is abundant.
Cafe w/ intl newsstand and TVs showing soccer (but it's Euro-feeling, not fratty sports-bar-feeling). Lovely spot for a meal or dessert, esp. the back room.
As ubiquitous as they are, I still can't resist cupcakes. The Salted Caramel and Red Velvet are dee-licious. Like their slogan says, they are "more moisty-er!"
You can get all kinds of stuff battered and fried, inc. fish, calamari, asparagus, beans. A good late-night stop. It's right near a ton of bars and clubs.
Nice spot for brunch, lunch, or coffee. I love the airy space, flea-market-ish decor, and relaxed feel - I could hang out here all day long!
It's late, you're hungry... you must seek out these tacos. The real deal - they've even got tripe and tongue. The pozole is good for a cold and rainy night.
Famous for their "hand-forged" donuts, but I liked the dill scone too! Several locations in the city.
Quick, tasty, and cheap pho on Broadway. Huge servings. Amusing wall murals.
Coffeeshop on the cute stretch of 15th Ave. Wonderful place to hang out and/or work - lots of tables, comfy chairs, cool art on the walls.
Dark and moody neighborhood pub/restaurant on 15th Ave. Taxidermy on the walls, but I swear it's not completely hipstered out. Bonus: They have poutine.
Southern / Cajun food. Come hungry - if you order dessert, be aware that one piece of cake is enough to feed 4 people! Cozy and dimly lit in a good way.
Vegetarian restaurant. Great for brunch - try the corn cakes or the biscuits & (veg) gravy. Nice indoor patio area. Spacious and good for groups.
Nice place to stroll or lie out, esp if it's sunny. Besides the grassy areas, there's a conservatory, Asian art museum, and water tower with views from the top.
Cafe in a cute yellow house, just 2 blocks from the park. Fresh, delicious sandwiches, salads, quiches, baked goods, and more.
Zoo with more naturalistic settings for the animals. I watched the ridiculously cute baby snow leopards (which are quite rare) for over an hour.
The line was outrageous, but the homemade ice cream was tasty! Interesting flavors like salted caramel, pomegranate curry, rosemary meyer lemon.
One of the coolest city parks I've ever been too. You look one way and see a stunning view of Seattle, you look the other way and see an old rusty refinery.
A giant troll hidden under a bridge in Fremont. I guess you've got to come and see it, climb all over it, and have your picture taken with it at least once.
Street market with stands selling antiques, clothes, jewelry, and other crafty things. A few food & produce stands too. A fun area to stroll around on Sundays.
60+ beers on tap, inc. a nice selection from WA. I liked Fish Tale's Winterfish (seasonal). Pub food inc. Belgian frites, fried chickpeas, soft pretzels, etc.
Local chocolate maker using organic, fair-trade beans. You can take a factory tour or just stop in their shop to try/buy some chocolate. Located in Fremont.
Popular spot for brunch. If you have to wait, there's free coffee outside! I recommend the Slacker Especial - eggy, cheesy goodness + excellent home fries.
Watch the boats go up and down in this "water elevator." If it's the right time of year, you can also check out salmon swimming up the Fish Ladder.
A nice little beachy stretch of sand with picnic tables and bonfire pits. You can see the Olympic Mountains across the water on a clear day.
Waterfront park w/ beach & paved walking/biking path. If it's a nice day, this is a great place to get some fresh air and admire the views of downtown Seattle.
Did I just walk onto the set of "Singles?" Flash back to the 90s in this combo record store / diner / cafe. Super friendly staff.
I miss Seattle just by looking at this guide!
