Stay where the locals live not in the tourist traps! I love to be out of the hotel strip, living as those that live on the island do :) Here are a few spots you may not see in the mainstream travel guides.
We have stayed here twice! Very near Paia center and all the natural attractions you need to see. Pool, ocean views, awesome breeze, and lemon trees :)
Maybe before Whole Foods was a corporation it was like this! Small but packed with wholesome fresh foods. Stock up here!!
On the corner of Hana Hwy and Baldwin in Paia, this place has really fresh fish. Get the Mahi Burger!!! OMG!
I guess it would be really hard to find a bad beach on Maui, but this is a special one.
Loved, loved, loved the body surfing here. A great beach!!
Simply a cave under the rocks that leads to a hole releasing the ocean as the waves push the water through. I love that you can walk right up to it!
Go to the sunrise (on a cloudy day), dress warmly, and bring your camera. Atop Haleakala is like no other experience.
You'll need a book as guide. But you start through the bamboo and hike your way past three waterfalls. You swim to the last, do it, you won't forget it, ever!
Just a tip - There is a Wal-Mart by the airport. You MUST have water shoes to walk on all the lava rock shores and a cheap beach chair is nice to have! :)
Hike across the lava rock (feeling like you are on the moon) to an inlet perfect for swimming and seeing fish galore!
I put the map marker on "Baby Beach", not an offical name, but it's got a GREAT tidal pool that is more swimming pool like than ocean! Enter from Kealakai Pl.
