Bay to Breakers Spots

by izzy izzy

Running/walking/stumbling Bay to Breakers this year? Welcome to the party! Bay to Breakers is San Francisco's biggest parade, when 70,000 locals and not-so-locals revel in the streets from the Embarcadero to Ocean Beach. Here are some points of interest along the route.

Specialtys Cafe & Bakery

A great place to pick up a cup of coffee and a pastry when you're bleary-eyed at 6am and going to your corral to start the race. Market @ Battery.

Safeway

Grab some corn tortillas - the race traditionally starts with a giant tortilla fight! Don't you just love San Francisco?

Market St

And we're off! The race starts in five corrals, all just off Market near Beale. Get here early, the flag drops at 8!

Powell Cable Car Turnaround

There's a public bathroom just in front of the Powell Cable Car turnaround.

UN Plaza/Civic Center

A few blocks from Powell, this is a good spot to rest and watch the revelers go by.

Go Go Deli Market

The first open liquor store on the course, according the to Official B2B Liquor Store Locator. (http://ow.ly/6YaQ)

La Boulange

Another cafe to grab a quick bite. French-style pastries, coffee and sandwiches. Everything is good. Seriously.

Hayes Street Hill in The World

The one hilly section of the race starts at Hayes and Laguna and goes up to Alamo Square. Heave-ho... don't let those floats slide backwards!

Alamo Square

Home of the Painted Ladies (anyone watch Full House?) and a great spot to enter the race if you don't want to start at the beginning-it's all downhill from here.

New Star Liquor

Right on the route, New Star is where you can go to stock up on beer, or just Gatorade!

California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

One of my favorite things about B2B: Some awesome people always set up a sound system at the DMV and have a party.

Panhandle (San Francisco)

Be nice around this area. These are the neighbors that complained and got the rules changed this year. Respect all the houses along the route, especially here!

Conservatory of Flowers

Now we go into Golden Gate Park for the "Nature" section of the race! It tends to degenerate pretty quickly from here.

Safeway

Stock up! Grab a sandwich, Clif Bar, some more beer, whatever! One block outside the park - turn right at the DeYoung Museum.

Golden Gate Park Rose Garden

Stop and smell the beautiful roses. Don't pick them, let everyone enjoy! There are beautiful hybrids and all the colors of the rainbow.

Prayer Book Cross

A quick right turn just before the 19th St overpass, walk up the hill here for a little peace and quiet.

Lloyd Lake (San Francisco)

OK I know it's going to be a scorcher, but resist the urge to jump in here. Gross.

Golden Gate Park Polo Fields

This is where the party stays as everyone gets "close enough" to the beach to stop and revel! You can pick up the Muni shuttle (back downtown) here.

Ocean Beach

Wooo-hooo! You made it! Congratulations, you've gone farther than most will ever go. Happy Bay to Breakers, everyone!

Wonderful guide. I feel like I'm at the race!

You should add the The Chieftain Irish Pub & Restaurant, on 5th Street. We usually start there, do a few shots and jump into the race.
