A Guide to Street Murals in the Mission

by kevin kevin

Explore San Francisco's Mission district for a free look at the Mexican heritage of this neighborhood. Murals can be found on just about every block. These are a handful of my favorite.

Balmy alley mural

Beautifully painted murals on this small street off of 24th. Grab some tacos, coffee or ice cream and peruse this hidden treasure in SF

Clarion Alley Mural Project

Modeled after the Balmy murals, you can find tons of murals here from under-represented artists. Be on the lookout for their block party every year.

Cesar Chavez Elementary School

Another beautiful mural you can see for free here on the side of the elementary school painted by Susan Cervantes and Juana Alicia.

Women's Building MaestraPiece

The mural represents women globally was just changed to incorporate scenes of sustainability. "Covering two exterior walls, Maestrapeace is as educational as it is inspirational and serves as a visual testament to the courageous contributions of women through time and around the world."

Carnaval Mural

Created to celebrate the yearly Carnaval festivities in the mission, this bright and exciting mural goes largely unnoticed among the buildings at Harrison and 19th.

24th St. Mission BART Mural

"BART" is the title of this piece -- created collectively in 1988 by children in the neighborhood.

Ralph Maradiaga Mini-park mural

"One mural portrays the Aztec deity Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, who forms the backdrop for a pre-Colombian village scene, with people working, fishing and playing music." - SFGate.com

500 years of resistance

This mural is by a Salvadoran artist Isaias Mata. It explores the Spanish conquest of the New World and its repercussions through the ages. Various pictures of revolutionary leaders line the mural's walls.
