The terraced vineyards of the Douro valley encompass 60.000 acres, and are a UNESCO world heritage site since 2001.
"This beautiful garden is distinguished by its great stairways, water tanks, coloured glazed tiles and decorative parterres. From the plan, one might think it a renaissance garden inspired by du Cerceau and dating from the 1550s and. In fact, as the exuberant detailing reveals, the garden was made in the 1660s. The water tanks have panels decorated with azulejos, plaques and busts, adding brilliant hues to the garden: terracotta, indigo, cerulean, turquoise, lemon-yellow. The Chapel Walk is an outdoor gallery with tiled panels showing allegories of the arts and sciences. Fronteira is perhaps the finest examples of a uniquely Portuguese approach to garden design: comfortable, grand, lush, intimate and brilliantly coloured" Garden Visit
"One of the last places in Europe where a sustainable local economy still dovetails harmoniously with nature.Every time we weigh up which bottle of wine to buy, we hold the fate of nightingales, rare black storks, secretive wild cats and one of the world’s most remarkable trees in our hands. It’s all to do with the stopper. If it’s cork, it probably came from the bark of one of the ancient cork oak trees from the Montados, in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The cork oak is the only tree in the world whose bark can be periodically removed without killing it. But this tree is amazing in other ways. It survives in poor soil and searing heat and provides not only nesting places for Booted Eagles but also space for some of Europe’s rarest wildflowers." BBC Natural World

In Flanders fields the poppies blow/ Between the crosses, row on row,/ That mark our place; and in the sky/ The larks, still bravely singing, fly/ Scarce heard amid the guns below.// We are the Dead. Short days ago/ We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow/ Loved and were loved, and now we lie/ In Flanders fields.// Take up our quarrel with the foe:/ To you from failing hands we throw/ The torch; be yours to hold it high./ If ye break faith with us who die/ We shall not sleep, though poppies grow/ In Flanders fields.//. John McCrae, May 1915

Olá quida,
Confesso que não conheço muitos jardins que merecessem o mesmo destaque que um Douro Vinhateiro. Contam parques? Bertiandos seria a minha eleição.
